The theoretical basis for applying social identity theory to understanding national identity in adolescents is elaborated, and relevant empirical studies are reviewed. The group attachment theory of national identity is suggested, and its utility in explaining the effect of various socio-psychological variables on national identity in adolescents is analyzed.
